As soon as I unpacked my wonderful Uuni 3 pizza oven, I couldn’t help wonder how I might carry it. After all, a pizza oven this small is crying out to be taken camping. Within minutes, a new project was born: I needed a pizza oven backpack.
First, I checked to see if I could fit all the components of the oven inside itself. For the project to make sense, I knew it needed to be as compact as possible. The goal was to fit everything into a single bag that I could wear while keeping both hands free. Fortunately, I was able to fit everything inside the oven, apart from the chimney. Once all the parts are packed inside, there is also a useful volume still available which could be filled with more fluid essentials like wood pellet fuel or pizza dough.
I started with a mockup, orĀ toile, out of calico and then bought some goodies from my favourite performance fabric supplier, Point North.
The details are similar to a traditional backpack, but the shape is tailored to the pizza oven.
The bag is made from my favourite abrasion resistant fabric: 1000 denier polyurethane-coated Cordura. Everything is sewn together with the ridiculously strong Gutermann Tera 60 polyester thread.
I designed the padding for my shoulder blades and lower back to coincide with the legs of the pizza oven. The pads are made with EVA foam from the local scrapstore topped with wadding and finished with black Airtex polyester mesh. The shoulder straps are strengthened with 25mm polyester webbing. To finish the edges I used a soft acrylic centrefold tape.
