Knifemaking Experiments

Experimenting with different knifemaking processes.

My earlier prototypes went well, so I thought I’d try something more complicated.

I started by laser cutting some familiar knife profiles out of cardboard to get a feel for the size and shape. When I was happy with the dimensions, I ordered some O1 tool steel and set to work cutting out the blade blanks.

The next job will be filing the bevels.

The part I’m most looking forward to is coming up with some interesting handles. Perhaps 3D printed with a flexible thermoplastic polyurethane, or two-tone cold cast aluminium. Maybe traditional hardwood, inlaid with pigmented resin?
