I love the way this project has managed to help solve an environmental problem while doing all sorts of good:
They stop valuable timber going to waste as well as reducing landfill by offering a collection service that costs less than hiring a skip. Companies can reduce their waste disposal bills as well. The wood is then either re-used or recycled where appropriate.
There is good range of timber available at sensible prices and unlike the big timber merchants the yard is friendly and open to everybody.
The project also creates worthwhile work for disadvantaged people. Volunteers from all backgrounds gain new skills, knowledge and confidence. There is also a workshop on site, where products are designed and built from reclaimed wood and volunteers are taught basic woodworking skills.
We are a timber yard, a wood waste collection service and a workshop. We are a self financed, not for profit social enterprise and a cooperative. Through saving valuable resources from waste we provide socially inclusive volunteering and learning opportunities.
This is a business model that seems to work well. Oxford Wood Recycling works in a similar way.
